What is a Living Will?

A Living Will deals with important health care decisions regarding treatment and medical procedures according to your wishes in the event of incapacitation or a diminished mental state. Having a Living Will can clearly define your wishes so that your loved ones do not have to make what can be extremely difficult emotional decisions for them. While these types of decisions are never easy, it is better to be prepared in the event that you find yourself in a state of incapacitation or a diminished mental state.

In your Living Will you may select a Health Care Surrogate to ensure your the choices you have made regarding medical treatment and procedures are followed. It may also be best if after drafting a Living Will, you provide a copy to the chosen health care surrogate, your spouse or children, and your doctor.

About a Living Will?

Most living wills contain conditional wishes for different types of situations, such as;

  • Your wishes regarding a DNR (do not resuscitate) orders;

  • Whether you do or do not want to receive medial treatment if in a vegetative state;

  • Your wishes regarding being kept alive on a ventilator;

  • Your wishes regarding treatment or medical procedures if in a coma;

  • Your wishes regarding organ transplants you may need, or allowing your organs to be used for others in the event of passing;

  • Your wishes regarding if a feeding tube if it would be required indefinitely;

  • Or any other treatment or medical procedure scenarios that may affect you.

One of the most important aspects of writing a living will is deciding what to do if you are terminally ill. Some people don’t want treatment that would extend life for a short period of time if their desired quality of life can’t be restored. Others do want life extended for as long as possible, even if they may be in pain, unconscious or unable to communicate.

In summery, each person has their own pain thresholds, whether or not he or she wants to be “kept” alive artificially, whether he or she want to extent their life as long a possible or slip away quietly, and each has personal feelings about how certain medical issues will affect his or her loved ones. A Living Will allows you to make your wishes known, so that you can take the burden off of your loved ones shoulders, and be treated with respect and dignity regarding difficult an personal medical choices.
